Claims 101
Document all damages as as soon as possible
Photos/ videos while peril is taking place, or as soon as can be done safely
Having photos before, immediately after, and later on can be helpful in proving your loss
Serial numbers of damaged electronics, receipts
Take all reasonable steps to prevent further damage to your property
This may include shutting off water, removing damaged property, or putting tarps over damaged exterior
This is a requirement under most insurance policies covered under temporary repairs
Contact your carrier to notify them of the loss
This can usually be done online, by calling your carrier claims line, or contacting your agent
Be prepared to provide the date of loss, cause of loss, and a brief summary of what occurred
Do not pad or exaggerate your claim. If you don’t know the answer to something it is ok to say you don’t know.
Be sure to document when the claim was filed and the claim number
Request Certified Policy and know your Rights
Having a certified true and correct copy of your policy is the cornerstone of a fair claims settlement. This will educate you on what exactly is covered and your requirements to receive compensation.
Some states have specific statues to protect consumers from unfair settlement practices. These may include requirements for prompt communications, as well as deadlines to perform inspections, and release payments.
Any violations should be reported to your state’s department of insurance
Maintain Documentation
Document times of phone calls, who you spoke with, and what was discussed. Follow up with email if possible reiterating what was discussed and what is expected from both parties.
This is important in holding them accountable to the statutory timelines
Provide invoices from your chosen service providers
Continue to monitor damaged areas for signs of damage
i.e. warping of damaged floors, darkening of water spots, peeling paint
this is helpful in proving that the damages are related to the claim
